Default Harlan / Red River Gorge, KY Oct 6-9

I am meeting up with some Kentucky guys along with a guy from St Louis and another from NC. All Rover guys, should be a fun time. All are welcome.

Here's the details:
Oct. 6-9, 2011
Harlan, KY and Red River Gorge, KY
Camping
I was tipped off to some good camping near Harlan. Kingdom Come State Park is about 20-30 minutes from Harlan. There is no camping mentioned on the KY state park website. I called and spoke to the Camp Manager, Rick Fuller. He was quite nice and very helpful. He confirmed that there is indeed camping there, but it is primitive with no elec. hook ups. The catch is that there are only 4 “spots” and they are first come first serve. He said they have never turned anyone away though. The camping fee is quite reasonable at $8/night. I think this would be a safer, more low key alternative to staying at the Harlan campground. Rick said the Harlan campground is “a big open field” much like the Badlands campground, whereas the camping at Kingdom Come is more secluded and wooded.

Traveling
Here are some travel times to keep in mind:
Chicago to Kingdom Come State Park = 9:40
Chicago to Louisville = 5:25
Louisville to Kingdom Come State Park = 4:20
Harlan to Red River Gorge(RRG) = 2:25
RRG to Chicago = 7:30
I’ve been thinking about how to make the drive down there, minimize time off work, and maximize our fun time. Here’s what I’ve come up with:
Wed. Oct 5th. Leave Chicago about 4pm. Drive to Louisville and spend the night. I’ll probably go with a $40 Priceline hotel if I can.
Thurs. Oct 6th. Meet up with Blake and whomever else early in the AM. Drive to Kingdom Come State Park, get sites and quickly set up camp. Hit Harlan!!!!
Friday Oct 7th. Open. Harlan, RRG.
Sat. Oct 8th. Open. RRG
Sun. Oct 9th. RRG, Drive home.
I figure we can guage how much time we want to devote to the Harlan area from our visit there on Thursday. If we want to devote another day or partial day to it we can. If we want to move up to RRG we can. After Harlan on Thursday our schedule will be pretty open to do with what we want.
Costs
OHV Permit: $20 for 31 days, or $35 for 1 year
Camping: $8-20 per night
Parking: $5 at the Putney Trailhead only
Gas: Varies

No flags required at Harlan and the trails are open 24hrs. ;D
Hope to see you all there!

Evarts Trailhead, Black Mountain, Harlan, KY. Shall we say 9am? That's for Thursday. Friday we'll probably start off at Harlan, too. Sat will be Red River Gorge, not sure exactly where.
I can be reached via email if someone is coming out for just a day or two.
