Diff too high?

Diff too high?
I live and work in Kuwait, I own a 1987 Land Rover Defender 90 V8, The last owner of the Defender change both axles with 2007/8 Land rover Discovery axles. I don't know for sure, but i believe that year model(08/7) has a higher Diff gear ratio, because 1st feels like I'm starting in 2nd.
Is this true?
Do i need to change out the hole diff or just some gears?
If i need to change the hole diff what should I be looking for?
I would like to get this close to Factory specs for off roading
Thank you

Just guessing that the Defender prob. has a 4:56 gears, I wouldnt mind betting the disco has somthing like 3:73 or some models may have 4:10 in them.I beleive if you look really hard on the axle tubes, you may have to do some sanding but there should be some kind of numbers that will tell you what gear ratio it has.If you have the wrong ratio it can wrack havic on your truck, such as broked gears, bearings, and uv joints, O yea bad M.P.H.If so go to a salvage yard and pick up a pair with the right ratio, as new gears, bearings, install kit, and laber will run you close to $2000.00.Good luck. If possable send us some gas over as I understand it is dirt cheap.

Stock disco gears are 3.54, as that is the gear they put int just about everything...they never put 4.56 in anything. Your tcase most likely has a 1.4 hi gear in it, which is stock for the 90 in that year. Jump under the truck and there should a tag on the back of the tcase stating it's gearing. Stock Disco ran 1.2 high gears, hence while it feels your first is so short....
