Default 3.9 v8 - Oil Capacity

Hi Guys,

I am still having an issue with the oil "idiot" light coming on after my rover is warm and cruising - I had taken her to a local goodyear shop and payed 100.00 for a supposed High End (royal purple) 15w40 oil change and Filter -

While changing out the waterpump - I noticed the oil filter was a cheap off brand. I checked the paper work for the oil change and the tech that did the work wrote down 5w30 - I have less than 400 miles on this oil change but it's been 3 months since the work was done.

My question is - how much oil does the 3.9 engine take?
Going to go with the Shell 15w40 this time, and do the oild change myself.
Don't want to by 3 gallons is I only need 2.

Thanks for your input..

Trav...

I use Rotella 5w-40 in the cold winter here and 15w-40 in the summer. Don't forget to pre-fill the new filter with oil. 2 gallons is all you need.

DONT DRIVE IT WHEN THE OIL LIGHT COMES ON BECAUSE YOU CAN DO SOME MAJOR DAMAGE TO YOUR ENGINE inthen you figure out why it comes on...

Someone will likely post it up, but it may be time for an oil pressure test. It's outlined in the RAVE and has been posted up on this board in the past.

Good luck!

How long after start up does the oil light come on?
Does it come on while driving and then go back off after you return to idle?

Just changed mine (4.0) and I use a jumbo oversize WIX filter, took seven quarts of 5W40 Rotella. Eric is right about fill up the filter, I counted 10 seconds before light went out without doing that (dumb and dry). But now light goes out as soon as I release the key, even before the brake light goes out.

The DI 4.0 takes 7 qts, the 3.9 takes 6.

Hi Guys -

I did the oil change - Using K&N Performance/Gold brand Filter - and Shell brand - 15w40 Oil..

I'm still experiencing an issue with the oil light coming on - I will create a different post to discuss possible solutions.

Thanks for all the input.
