Sheesh.......

Um, in your lengthy summarization of everything already discussed you left out the - "alarm spider"....... I'm not surprised. Formerly everyone made a contribution to move the OP's knowledge forward.......

You revved the engine in neutral, whoopee, put it in gear and step on the skinny pedal next time.

... and the verdict is ...

Bad ECM ... I bought an ECM and ECU, both used off eBay. Popped the ECM in first, and the beast cranked (and started) immediately.

Oddly, I'm still not getting CEL in Position II ... Now I'm thinking that the bulb burned out some time between the time I cleared the codes.

Recall that I had the CEL lit before all this began (a code about a non-optimal something or other). Then my son emptied the battery by leaving the lights on all night. I helped him get it started next morning with a jump, but it would only crank, not fire. Then I cleared the codes, then I started talking to you all.

I find it odd that I can read/clear the codes with an apparently dead ECM.

Running like a champ again! Hooray!

Thanks, everyone, for your help!

Oh, ... last question ... Does anyone know the part number for the heat shield for the crank position sensor? Mine was all cracked and falling apart, so I had to go without it. I don't want to go without it long.

Thanks in advance ...

Glad it worked out. For the record the ECM was faulty, not dead.

As far as the crank sensor either make one or PM a member here with the handle "abran", he might have one.

Glad you worked it out, my crank sensor just has a section of that old heat riser flex tube used on old Carb engines over it and the wire, way oversize but does the job ( PO did it)

Honestly there's only so many things to go wrong on these and some of us have experienced most of them so.... and sometimes there is no real explainable reason why you just have to trust in the experience of older members
