Default Absolutely Terrible side to side squeak in the Rear of the Rover

All,
1997 with 167000 miles on it.

After traveling in heavy rain - next day developed a harsh squeak.

If one grabs the roof rails and then pushes and pulls the body side to side -
one can hear a squeak around the back bumper or so.

Can also be heard when the rover is tilting on turns.

This is causing wife to sell Discovery I where as money added to the vehicle in the past 3 years is $6000+

and the Craigslist value is a high of $3,500 but most likely $2,500 or so just to sell it off.

Even if I can figure out the "deal killer" squeak, she will want to sell it - Seattle area.

But, first, any ideas of the squeak?
Common?

You need a pal to shake it while you slide under it and listen, perhaps armed with a spray can of lube. This is actually a good thing for SWMBO to be involved in, as the listener. Females have better high frequency hearing, and most can hear you a lot further than previously thought....

Shock bushing? Anything that flexes.

I call BS. My wife never hears anything in the truck or our van. I'll get in ans say "How long has it been making that noise?" and she'll say "What noise?".

Unbelievable noise.
Sounded so loud - like the frame is shifting on the truck..

Shook the truck side to side and loud.

Finally located to:

Side bumper plastic part on left side of bumper. Plastic rubbing along bumper
and making on hell of a noise.

Side bumper part was rubbing on the paint of the chassis or body and when
the body rolled - it must have rolled on the rubber mounts and left the
bumper stationary and there by flexing this plastic piece.

Loosened two bolts - 13mm that hold the plastic part to the bumper.
Had about 1/4 cm where I could get a hammer and tap the mount out
and tighten the bolts..

----
I had the bumper off a week or two ago.
Fixing damage from wife backing into a pole at a gas station.
Had to get a 4 pound hammer and a big bolt and pound out
a "V" in the bumper.

Not sure if removing and putting the bumper back on make this noise start
or someone hit the car on the plastic part in the last few weeks
as the bottom securing screw from plastic side part to the retaining metal form it mounts on was missing. A small phillps screw.

Attached is a picture of the plastic part - moved out and away from the body work.

And the "V" after it got pounded out on the right side.
For 5 years I had a broken light in there and had a new light
just hanging around.

I had no confidence I could pound out that bumper.
Yes you can.

Haha,
I like that wife of yours..
What noise??

You are very luck.
Mine is
OMG - the car will explode or strand me in the road and I"ll be hit by another car.
The Rover is a 1997.
I added up the parts I replaced and it came to about $6,000.
She wants me to sell it.

I put an ad on Craigslist - but will probably only get $2,000 for it.
To me - not worth selling period - keep it.

But "war of the roses".
$25,000+ debt for some new car - here I come.
Selling my Rover - may just pay for the tax on a new car.
It is a joke.
And you get a car loan and you pay the car 2 times over..
Totally a rip off.
And, of course the insurance - probably $1,000 every six months.
Just to drive the bank's shiny new car..

Well, this rover is Beluga Black. It still shines nice.

-------
Just pasting my ad for your enjoyment.. This is no an ad to sell the rover on this BB.

All fluids changed 2009 - in differentials.
Transmission fluid changed each year.

Why are we selling this Discovery?
My wife simply wants a new car. She has driven it since we were married in 2000 and wants a new car.

This Discovery has been mostly driven by my wife - and we have been a two car family.
This Discovery did spend a lot of time in dry California and has ALWAYS been in a garage.
Absolutely no heat fade on the paint.

Most functions on the Discovery work, a few do not.
You may as well get no surprises - right?

Parking brake - works and holds well.

Engine runs smooth.

Transmission shifts smooth.

Great for a trip to Vancouver, Canada and can travel comfortably 75+ MPH.
Absolutely perfect on the road - no vibration from tires.

This is a well maintained Land Rover which has had many items which can go bad - replaced.
As such - you will not have problems with any of the common items going bad whatsoever.
Water pump, battery, alternator, power steering pump, all these items replaced last three years.

I don't want to sell this Land Rover Discovery.
My wife does.
So, it is for sale.

$6,000+ spent on this in the last three years. (Which means - you will probably not need to spend for awhile)

Price is reasonable at $3,500 and you know exactly what you have. We have receipts for all major repairs.
Face the winter in comfort and safety with this 1997 Discovery. 4 wheel drive and new Cooper tires to boot.

Wife said - if you can get $3,500 for the 1997 Land Rover - then sell it.

Guy came out.
Said he had to take it to his mechanic.
So mechanic said the left front wheel judders over bumps.

And, the steering is not too tight.

So, he did not want our Rover.
And that's fine with me.
As I have owned it since new - 1997.

Here are some videos

Take a look at the Discovery with this Video on Youtube

Here is the 4.0 liter V8 running.
Very smooth
