Default Bound to happen - starter out

I suppose it is the starter. Go to crank it and the machine gun "click click click" happens. No turnover. Dash lights work. If not the starter..? Any good recommendations for a new one?

Thanks

don't know about new but Will Tillery sells used starters pretty reasonably. though you may be located closer to one of the other dismantlers.

Here is an interesting site for starters. I've heard good things.

British Starters

I replaced with one from British Atlantic and have been happy.

Turns out i jumped it and it works fine. I only drive it once a week so maybe thats the problem. I'll crank it more frequently.

Clean your battery connections really well. Happens a lot.

That I need to do toward the bottom end. Cables on top at battery are solid and clean, plus new battery. But when you follow the cable down it gets dark and saturated with oil..of course. What exactly would I clean it with and where does the cable end? At the starter I suppose?

Yes it goes to the starter. I would use a can of electric parts cleaner on the starter and wire ends, if there is a lot of build up brush with a brass brush to knock it all off.

I am having similar problems, trying to diagnose properly, I have a 2004 Disco. My engine clicks (machine gun clicks) but no start, battery is good as I checked the voltage and Cold cranking amps. I am assuming it is the starter... I was going to take it off tonight but didn't have proper tools on me (car stranded at my marina) I also noticed that my head gasket problem drips right down on the starter, it is super wet around the Vbatt and GND terminal. Will clean that first tomorrow before I take the sucker off and get it checked.

If i go more than 4-5 days without cranking mine it won't turn over. If i hook jumper cables to it it turns over immediately. I've had to do this more often now. I'm not sure if I need to replace the starter or what. Both the starter and alternator are original from 1998. Maybe that should be a hint.
