Default How many 5 speed discos were made?

Can anyone tell me how many 1996 Land Rover Discoveries with the 5 speed manual transmission were produced for the US? I called Land Rover and the girl stated she would have to get back to me. They did not know.

Nice post placement.

Default No idea...

From my personal experience there are more 94/95 5 speed discos than 96+.

I can't tell you about the '96 models, but I recall a friend who had a LR book that specified numbers.

I have a '97 manual, and from what I recall there were just over 700 for the Canadian market, and just over 14,000 for the US market for the 97's.

That should give you a rough idea for the '96 model year (I'm gonna guess maybe the same or slightly less).

I recently posed the same question to Land Rover as I wanted to try and register the truck as a collectible.. Not sure if I met the qualifications or not though for my state as it just requests a letter from a car club or manufacturer stating its rarity.

Thank you for contacting the Land Rover Customer Relationship Center. Thank you for providing that VIN. I was able to further research your request. In 1996 the North American market produced approximately 17,400 Discovery's. Just under 5% of those produced were indeed the manual transmission like yours.

I seriously doubt there were 14,000 5 speed DI's imported into the US in 1997. I would venture a guess that there might have been 14,000 5 speeds imported overall into the US but I think even that number is high. I remember seeing total imports by year for the DI a number of years ago. Imports of all DI's automatics and 5 speeds were over 20,000 for a few years but automatics outnumbered 5 speeds by over ten to one. The first two years, '94 and '95 saw the largest number, as a percentage of total imports, of 5 speeds brought over but, even then numbers were no where near 14,000/yr.

I think I was overly optimistic about DI import numbers. I just came across a page on line that had these figures:

DI
1994 6495 units
1995 11,570 units
1996 15,491 units
1997 14,703 units

there were no stats for 1998 or 1999 DI sales.

Given those numbers, there's no way 14,000 DI's were imported with 5 speed transmissions in 1997 or over the four years of data provided here.

I'd lay odds on well under 5,000 total imports of 5 speeds over the model run of the DI in the US.

I would bet less than that. 500 or so. I have seen 2. 1 for 14 years and 1 yesterday. Who knows, it might be the same one.

I'd say I've parted about a dozen over the years. I also have two R380's in pieces sitting in storage for a customer. He owns four or five (at least 3 XD's) all with R380's.

I'd guess the numbers were somewhere along the lines of 1200 in '94, 1500 in '95, 1200 in '96 and 1000 in '97. I don't believe they did any 5 speeds in '98 or '99.
