It all depends on how low the charge is on the battery you are trying to revive. I have a jump box that I bought in 97 that is 500 amp and have used it around the shop for many applications. I have used it to start cars without a battery and even work the winch on my trailer. I have used it on the lake with my 750hp BBCs and for the forklift in the shop. It was a great purchase but it is getting to the point that it is not holding a charge and the case has been falling apart for years. It no longer has a carry handle and I had to rig a way to store the cables when not in use. Fortunately I received a new one for Christmas and I hope it lasts as well.
Heavier the better, but like above, they are sure handy to have around, and they depend on the vehicle having something left in the "dead" battery. Easier to use than jumper cables, but don't throw those out just yet....
My ex said he bought a motorcycle battery that fit in his case when the battery in the jumpstarter wouldn't recharge. The one I got for Christmas was a Peak 600 amp. I had left it at my mother's and didn't get it till yesterday. It should be enough. I had borrowed my brothers portable a few months ago and it wouldn't even start the car, then he brought me the big one and it started. I have since replaced the battery. I still need to have the cables replaced since they are corroded down a ways. Should have replaced battery sooner. I put a penny under the terminal this time.

I took one apart once and it had a model type batter (for starting model cars and airplanes). I got about 2 or 3 good cranks out of it before it was totally dead.
