see End All answer to stupid oil questions.

Rotella comes in a 5W40 synthetic and a 15W40 conventional. 5W40 if you have temps in the 20's.

So, why are you not wanting to go to one of the better synthetic oils? As for the oil weight, as cold as you get in the winter anything in the 5 or 10/40 range is fine, then go heavier in the summer, all the way up to a 20/50 range, all per your owners manual.

So a Purolater Filter and Rotella 15w40 (people who do not live in the frigid cold areas) is best eh? Sounds good to me. My question is if I plan on getting an upgrade to a HD track rod and drag link and steering dampener relocation, can I still use the purolater? From the thread it seems like it's a negative on that one.

See pix for clearance, as an example. This is a D1.

So that part number on the thread can also be used on a D1? Just making sure because it's on the D2 platform and when I went to Purolator's website and plugged in my info they only had Land Rover -> Discovery Series 1 -> 1999
in their database to look up filters and it came back as L25195 for the part number

Mine is a 1995 :]

Or, if you want the best filters, consider the Mobil1-301 or the K&N 3001, both the extended size and both rated in the top 3 or 4 oil filters in the most recent oil filter comparison testing, both also made by the same company. Other then the Amsoil by pass filter, these are a great way to go.

calebbo,

The MANN W950/4 or Purolator L40316 stickered filter can fit a D1 or a D2. The OP of End All answer to stupid oil questions. shows an application in his indy shop.

I found that Purolater also stickers the MANN W950/7, which has a 10 PSI bypass rating. It will bypass (flow unfilter oil) sooner than the L40316. The 10 PSI rated filter is L40107. You might prefer that.

As far as the filters boosting oil PSI, that is done by more material and larger surface area, less pressure drop across filter. If we change our filters on a reasonable schedule you'll never have a really dirty filter. The issue about higher pressure causing more oil leaks would not apply here, as the oil pressure in cold start is maximum the pump can produce anyway. If your Disco is not leaking at 45 PSI, it is not likely to leak at 53 PSI, as an example.

The combination of large size and lower pressure is appealing. Lots of semi trucks run 40 quarts of oil. I, and a lot of others, have run a variety of oversize filters, which boost oil capacity by almost 1 quart. Main thing is run a diesel rated oil for improved cleaning, a quality filter, and change often.

The larger filter fits, and can do a good job, and has some advantages. But it can also block suspension mods.

I've been using Rotella 15w/40 since the day I got it so no worries there. But I have switched around oil filters from Mobil-1 to K&N. I mean it doesn't really matter to me since they are all around the same price. I just want to try something different haha.
