Radio Fix: Cassette Drive Belt
#11
I think your in the right place and that this fix will work for you. Mine was doing the same, in addition to not ejecting, it was switching from side to side.

Great thread, thanks for the fix. I'm hopeful I can get my stock unit to play more than the WB. I followed instructions here and got the unit opened up and cassette drive out and found it odd that there was no belt in my unit at all. I put the new belt over the two drives and felt something sticky on what appears to be the end of the motor. Then I realized the belt had melted on to top cover and on the end of the motor.
So I have a few questions:
1 - What is the correct serpentine route of the belt? I see two large drive pulleys and the end of the motor.
2 - I assume I need to clean the end of motor. This melted rubber is extremely sticky - any ideas of how to clean?

Well, no love. Replaced the belt and put the unit back in, entered the code, started on WB, hit band and it went to tape, hit eject and nothing. Took it back out and wound the tray back up so I could try radio, put it back in and still only WB and tape. Kind of at a loss, so I'll set aside and try again another time. $50 replacement head is looking better by the day, but I do love trying to keep it stock.
I also have the manual now, so let me know if you need any info.
Yet another edit: Turns out I had not wound the tape deck up all the way. When you have it open, spin the pulleys without the belt and watch all the gears move. You will see where it "disengages". Now I have radio and CD. Time to replace some speakers!

from the exploded view you posted it looks like you routed the belt incorrectly. from the exploded view it looks as thought the belt goes over the top of the first pully closest to the motor (top meaning side closest to motor)
So to me it looks like it should be over the first pully, under and around the second pully and back to motor.
not sure if you noticed that or tried it
most cassette decks use a belt for the capstan, therefore I would think, being a reverse play capable deck, this belt should spin the pullies in opposite directions - so it spins the capstan in the correct direction depending on which side of the tape is being played
