Default WTF is this noise

Ok Kats and kittens, a little game of lets guess what this noise is to put a little fun into your night.

Wife driving, out of the blue it starts making this noise:

sounds like a jack hammer, very strong vibration when you put your hand on top of the intake. intermittently goes away. I fear for my valvetrain *sigh*

no warning leading up to this, still drives strong. noise appears to be emanating from top center of engine. sorry for the video quality, it is cold and raining pretty good and my kids killed my flashlight and didn't tell me, of course. hoping its not a career ending injury, cause I got no cashola this close to christmas.

happy holidays everybody!

Maybe IACV freaking out and jack-hammering the intake?

There's not many moving parts up above the rockers. I could imagine a bent pushrod or stuck valve making that sound though as metal knocked together.

I would imagine something in the valve train might make noises like that but it would be constant and not intermittent like that (I'm guessing). It did seem to change with RPM though.

Sounds awful. It should be relatively easy to track down though with that much noise and vibration. You should be able to feel that wherever it's coming from. Good luck!

Listen through a wooden stick to valve covers, and other areas, makes it easy to hear what is going on, under which valve cover, etc.

Check engine light on?

I think you'll have to remove a valve cover on this one. It sounds like backfiring through the plenum meaning a valve isn't seating or isn't opening completely. Rocker button maybe or a collapsed lifter. Just guesses. Injector out of it's seat. I think the IAC would have punched through it's seat by now and it for sure wouldn't be active after throttle plate opens but you never know. Just guesses so far.......need eyeballs on this one.

Pretty sure it is metal to metal noise. it is LOUD. I would have to say at this point that it is a stuck lifter, maybe. if it is a stuck tappet, I imagine that my cam is toast, too. dammit. well, gonna bang out of work tomorrow and tear it down.

anybody tear theirs down, get the heads off? what kind of time to do this - seems pretty straightforward according to rave - I hope to have heads off before lunch.

rovahfarm looks to have reasonable prices too. man, this SUCKS.

You only need to remove the intake manifold to get to the lifters.

Time depends on prep, tools, skill, distractions, etc. Since a whole HG job is like 12 hours shop time, you can be to the valley pan before lunch.

Yeah, but can you get them out without removing the pushrods?

I guess looking at it now do I just have to remove the rocker arm assemblies to get said pushrods out and then tappets?
