2004 Disco II will crank but won't start
Hi Guys, I have been to this forum several times for advice, but I never posted anything. Well, here is the first one. I have a 2004 Land Rover Discovery, and I have been having a problem starting the car for the past two weeks. At first I thought it was the battery, but I have it checked and it was fine. Then I find out that the positive connector to the battery was loose, I took it to my mechanic, and he change the connector , I thought that was it, but no. The car will crank as I said before, but will not start, I had to wait for at least 10 minutes and try again and then it will start. It is pretty random, and I don't know what it is. I took it back to my mechanic, he put the car thru the computer, but no codes came out, everything looked fine.
This past weekend I had a trip planned to Cape Cod, I took the car, but I was fearful of what may happen. It got me there from NY to Cape Cod, I had the problem once when I stop for gas and had to shut off the engine. I waited the 10 min and it started again. On my way back, while driving on the I-95 South the car just shut off, thanks God I was next to service road and I was able to stir the car to the side. Again, I waited like 20 mins and the car started again. I have the car parked in my driveway and I don't want to move it until I fix this problem. The other thing I notice is that the engine kind of "coughs" while driving after one of these episodes. Anybody has any ideas?, battery is fine, oil is fine, it has gas etc. The car has regular maintenance. I really don't want to go to the dealer and spend thousands of dollars just for the problem to remain the same. Help!

You are going to the wrong mechanic if he could not properly diagnose your failed crank shaft position sensor.
And no need for a dealer... Just take it to an independent land rover specialist... Not a foreign car repair shop or the guy down the street. Take it to someone who ONLY works on LR's every day.

If you can get your hands on an OBDII Scanner tool you can confirm that it's the Crank Position Sensor by setting the scanner to "LIVE DATA" and watch the "RPM" reading while you are cranking the engine over trying to start it. It should read somewhere around 160 RPM with just the starter turning the engine. If it reads Zero RPM then you have confirmed a bad CPS or at the very least a bad connection at the connector/harness in my case... but it sounds like a classic CPS failure. It wouldn't be considered jumping the gun at all to just throw one at it.

Crank Shaft Sensor
It was the crank shaft sensor that was malfunctioning. However, the car was put thru the computer twice and no error codes showed up. A month ago I had very low levels of motor oil also, and the indicator light did not came up either. I don't know if there is a problem with the internal computer of the car or something, but the problem was solved thanks God.
Thanks for all your advise. I really appreciated it , I'll make sure to try those shops near my home.
Thanks,
JessicaJW
