Default 2004 Driveshaft just rebuilt - question on NG centering ball

Thanks to this forum and Disco Mike's warnings about front driveshaft failure, I had mine rebuilt last week by Boulder Driveline here in Colorado. Nice guys, $308 out the door including R&R labor because I didn't have the time to pull the shaft myself and drop it off. Dropped it off the evening I called and picked it up the next afternoon- FAST service.

I have a question though. The technician said he replaced the u-joints with the greasable kind but that the centering ball is non-greasable and that he doesn't know of any that are greasable. In reading the pdf file on the topic here on the forums, it clearly specifices a non-greasable centering ball as well, but greasable u-joints. Is that correct? Can the centering ball fail and take out the shaft or should I not worry about it?

Thanks for the guidance.

Cheers,
Dave

I have never heard of a greaseable centering ball. The u-joints are the primary concern. Those are the ones that break due to lack of lubrication and destroy the transmission.

Thank you, Thomas. That's what I needed to know. Happy to have the new driveshaft for peace of mind on long road trips and when the wife is driving it while I'm in Mumbai, Zurich, London or some other place where I can't do anything about it if she breaks down.

Cheers,
Dave

There's enough of us in Colorado that can help out if something does happen while you're gone.
