Default brand of motor oil---2003 Discovery

Going to change my oil in the Disco instead of having the dealer do it (Midwest US):
1) Which brand (and weight and specs) do the LR service centers at the dealerships use?
2) Which brand (and weight and specs) do you all recommend?
3) Anything unique I should know before diving in (filters, accessories, issues)? I've changed oil in vehicles thousands of times, but never a Rover.
thanks as always.............

I would suggest Rotella's 15W/40 synthetic Diesel oil and a Mobil 1-301 oil filter.
Do not use what the dealers recommend, they all use the cheapest bulk oil to make more money and it is not always what is best for the truck.
Was the 60K done, if not you have a long list of stuff needed, along with new 8 mm plug wires and rebuilding or replacing the front drive shaft before it fails. Also plan on a new t/stat. coolant pressure cap and serpentine belt. See my sticky at the top of this section.

no it was not------right now I can afford the thrmo cap and little else---that's why I'm changing my own oil. Stinks to be a LR owner with tight funds. Thanks for the info.

I use NAPA Gold oil filters, $6, made by Wix.
Purolator is also a good filter.
I also use Rotella, get it at Wal-Mart, $12.50 per gallon jug.

Kurt,
For what it's worth......I used fully Synthetic Mobil 1 10w30 until Forrest had around 80k miles then switched to non Synthetic GTX 10w40 high mileage, which I will use until...... (I'm the second owner and Forrest had a little under 40k when I got him). I also use NAPA Gold oil filters, on all my cars.
Hope this helps some.
C'ya,

Any Rotella is excellent, just run the weight for your temperature and preference. I currently use T6 5w-40 (full synthetic), but will switch to 15w-40 (dino) for the warmer months in the next couple of weeks. Mobil 1 301 long filter as well.

Bundu-I only get 15w-40 in dino only as well...Walmart
