Hello again,

I just thought I would ask... Is 11-14 MPG REALLY bad?

Here's what I know about the truck.

It's a '99
It's got 115k on it
It's had the tranny and transfer case replaced with an '04, so I have full CDL.
It's previous owner, who owned it for most of it's life before me, did all of his own work so I don't have many records, but I do know he maintained the heck out of it (annually changed all the fluids, rebuilt the drive shafts, did the head gaskets, etc.)
It has lifted (I don't know how much, see photo) Old Man Emu suspension
It has 285/60/R18 Nitto's on it
It's blue
I drive in pretty gently and never use sport mode.
I burn 91 or 93 depending on prices.


Here's a photo... How much lift do you suppose that is?

Yes there is possibly something wrong.
You should be getting ~14 mpg as a daily driver, thats mixed city/highway.

Is the check engine light on?
How is the tire pressure?
The air filter?

And keep in mind that unless YOU did the work it was never done.
NEVER ASSume that someone else did anything to a car before you bought it.
I always ASSume that they did nothing other than put gas in it, so I always go through it bow to stern and replace all fluids and filters, plugs and wires so that way I know they are all good.
You might want to do the same.

Right now I am leaning towards failing O2 sensors.

 

Looks like about 2" lift maybe just a little more. I would definately give it a tune up plugs,wires,air filter,and throttle body cleaning. I average about 9 mpg but no highway miles and im running 4"lift an 33"s mostly back roads an off road. But start with a tune up and go from there. On another thought you mite want to replace the O2 sensors also at least the pre cat ones that helped mine considerably.

 

stop and go, even a few, kills gas mileage with rovers. You can get 17mpg all day driving 65mph on the interstate...stop 2 times within 50 miles and your mileage is probably down to 15mpg. I think during stop and go rovers must get .01mpg.

 

Most of my driving it city based. Once a week or so I take 100 mile round trip, but otherwise, my 3 mile commute has about 13 stop and go points.

Plugs are brand new. Wires are two years old. O2 sensor have been replaced, but not super recently. What's the typical lifespan of an 02 sensor?

 

A O2 sensor will last approx 60k or so, depends on the quality of the sensor.

But yeah, 3 mile commutes and you will get 2 mpg, be happy with your 12 mpg.

 

I get 12 in town with short commute. That is normal. I have gotten nearly 20 on the highway going slow and tucking in with the semi trucks.

 

Is that the stock 18" tire size? If not you can figure you are doing a little better than the odometer says

 

i usually average 15mpg combined. Lol funny though first fill up with the cherry bomb and a 2.5" lift I got 17mpg combined.

 

I also average around 15 mpg combined.
