Default Racing idle

From start my engine races at 2000rpm! It comes down to about 1000rpm when warmed up. There is very strong suction through the air intake but when I block it off with my hand the motor still races at idle. Shouldn't the motor die? Does this mean that there is air getting into the inlet manifold other than through the air intake?

Any suggestions?

I checked the vacuum hoses and connections wherever I saw them going and the cruise works.

Start with vaccum leaks, then clean the t/body plate and the idle control unit, that should help you.
