What are the pros and cons to installing CDL on a 2003 Disco?
#3
I had a CDL installed on my '03 and the only "con" is that it costs a few dollars to do. I don't remember what it ran me but my shop - Cityside Garage - treated me right in terms of labor and provided some bits off of some parts vehicles that they already had - thank you Cityside Garage.
"Pros" are that you now have a lockable transfer case that will give you real 2x4 traction. For real 4x4 traction you will need to install lockers in your front and rear differentials which is about $2k in parts plus labor.

you currently only have traction control. While this a very good system it has its limitations. Adding CDL will gain a level of performance off road, in heavy snow, mud,etc.... that allows your truck to operate at a much higher level. There are few options for this for our '03s. The most direct id to get a new or used '04 transfer case. along with the shifter lever. Total time to pull and replace old with new is 6-7 hours with installation of new shifter. The other options is to go with the front end bolt on unit from TODDCO, you do not need to pull the current transfer case but you still need the shifter. Cost are varied. The new/used transfer case can be anywhere from 1400.00- 300 plus the shifter at another 150-200. You can try a you pull it junk yard if you have one close by. the TODDCO options should run about 600.00 including shifter. but the work will be a little tighter as you are working around the transmission transfer case etc.. all in place.I f you do or are thinking of doing any significant off roading then the addition is a must... I am in the final stages of this decsion as well I want to have CDL installed by first snow. I hope to make a choice in the next week. I will post the choice and subsequent upgrade once it starts.
