Default Fuel Tank Flush Write up?

Hello all,

New here and was wondering if there is a good write up on dropping the fuel tank to clean it out. Was going to get my moms 2000 DII started but it hasn't been started in about 8 years.

Also, any special tools to replace the fuel filter?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Leo

I don't know about the V8 but removing the tank of the TD5 was no picnic as the plastic tube fuel lines had worn through for the 3rd time so I syphoned as much diesel out as possible and dropped the tank but it was mega heavy even with it a quarter full. The TD5 fuel filter is located on the frame behind the rear passenger side wheel but no doubt different on the V8 but the diesel filter is a screw on canister type like an oil filter.

Fuel filter is integrated to the fuel pump, a screen on the pump pickup basically. The pump itself may be bad after sitting that long too, not uncommon in a situation like that.

Great info guys. Is there an access area from the top for the fuel level indicator (or internal pump)? Like a panel. If so, any special tool or bolt size. Going to bring some basic tools over to my moms and want to make sure I have what I need.

Thanks again!

Perfect! Looks like 4 screws and all the lines are clips.

Thanks for this.

Found out the hard part is actually getting to the access panel. Had to remove both panels on the sides. Found my issue. 2 prehistoric mice.

Actual problem was the hoses on the internal pump were brittle and broke off. You can also see the housing coming off the electrical wires too.

Sourcing a replacement pump now.

Question: Is this a "non" secondary air injection model? How do you tell?
