Ignition Timing Adjustment

Ignition Timing Adjustment
Hi all,
I'm in the middle of tuning the Disco and I'm having some trouble with the timing.
I've gone out and bought a timing light, hooked it up and straight away the marks show a fair way off, if the finger is at 2 o'clock the notch on the pulley was past 3 o'clock (20 degrees plus)
There is a slot in the fan belt pulley and a finger bolted onto the block - I'm guess this is TDC (Top Dead Centre).
How do I work out 6 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Centre)? there are no increment marks on the finger.
The other issue is that I rotated the distributor to line up the two marks and the vacuum advance is almost hard up against the power stearing pump! doesn't seem right.
Any help appreciated!

Thanks Greg,
I got the RAVE but it is for later models. I downloaded an earlier version PDF. Maybe not quite as elementary as the RAVE.
Does the position of the Vacuum Advance sound right to you. Right now it is at about 4 o'clock. In my PDF of the '94 model there is a diagram showing the plug numbers on the distributor. In that diagram it shows the Vacuum Advance at around 10 o'clock.

I would have no idea about proper initial clocking of the vacuum advance. (I've got a '97) and it states to have it disconnected while timing.
In the old days, we would set the timing mark to zero on the crank, drop the dist in with the rotor pointing at #1 in the cap. (make sure your oil pump shaft is engaged)
Confirm the rotation, set the wires in the cap in correct order, should start well enough to be timed.
Antichrist, the rave mentions "mark" as tho' there's only one.

What I thought was the mark was a square notch - don't think it is used for timing.
After sanding the surface of the pulley with 800 grit I found the said notches with "after 12||6|||||6||12 before" scribed into the pulley.
It was really hard to see so I put a strip of electrical tape on the 6 (before side) and timed against that.
seems to be running okay - fuel consumption will tell I guess!
