so im told the reason that my m and s lights are on is because the inhibitor switch is faulty . or xyz switch i think they are called . Is this an easy swap or mechanical job . has anybody done it ? also does it have an electrical plug ? I hope i have this right ?

 

Yes it is pretty easy, you an usually rebuilt it.
Remove it, take it apart, clean it, lube it, put it back together.

 

1. You'll want the RAVE to look thru to be sure you want to tackle this. Not too difficult.

2. The XYZ switch gets drip from the AC drain, and with a little extra water it builds up gunk inside. Expensive to replace. Some have drilled it open and cleaned up and resealed.

3. See pix of inside of switch, and switch location. Wiring diagram shows multiple contacts, and the tranny section of the RAVE will tell you which contacts are closed in which position.

4. There are a number of tranny ECU codes that make the M&S light s flash, and some have nothing to do with the XYZ switch. Are you getting a code?

to answer your question it is a mechanical/electrical switch.
Who told you it was the xyz switch? and what other test did they od for the M&S light.
The XYZ switches has become the boggy man of discoverys, if the answer can be found blame it on the xyz switch.
Which by the way is approx. a $600 part new and if your lucky $150-200 used, so you probably want to be sure that is your problem.

 

Like the man says, there are 18 codes that can make the M&S lights come on from the transmission ECU. Would be a shame to tear apart a good switch if it was something else. Attached is a list of codes for the tranny and their M&S status.

 

Are you having shifting problems, does your gear indicator on the dash show what gear you are in? Most of the time when the M&S flash, although they are supposed to be for tranny issues, it will flash because of bad grounds/connections and or low voltage issues.
Before tearing into it, check these things out and go have your charging system tested at a local part store. Voltage needs to be between 13.6 and 14.4 volts.

 

13.6 and 14.4 . is that from the battery and is that at idle or under load . if I get the codes , will that pinpoint the problem , i.e.if it is the switch will it say that or if its voltage , will it say that . Any help is good help as this has been going on for over 12 months

 

Tranny is electric control, so battery volts in truck needs to be good. At idle, with no extras on, volts on battey should be 13.6 - 14.4 volts. As devices are switched on, volts may drop a little. With AC, head lights, wipers, radio, it should still be above 13.2 volts. If volts are low, alternator can't carry the load and maintain a charge on the battery.
