Default Looking at an 02 Discovery

I have been lurking around and reading through threads on here for a few months. I have looked at a few Disco II's in the area and came accross this

2002 land rover discovery

I am fairly mechaniclly inclined and can do alot of work myself, what do you guys think about this one? The owner says he thinks it jumped time because it will not start since it over heated. I could probably get this for $500-750. Should I look into getting this or move on?

Overheated can mean a lot of things on a Discovery, more than just a bad water pump. If the motor is bad you might as well put your time and money into a 2004 in similar condition.

Keep Looking.

If he makes the determination that his truck jumped time because it overheated, I wouldnt even buy the tools to fix his truck from him..

For my opinion, too many unknowns. I would pass. Too many options out there it seems to settle on one with questionable problems.

For 500.00 to 750.00 it's good for the body, interior, transmission, axles, and TC. Motor wise it's probably a lot more than just a water pump, so expect dropping in another 4.0L.

It's a LR if it's to cheap it's cheap for a reason and like the old saying goes you do get what you pay for.

You probably aren't going to find a very nice LR for any less than 3K IMHO. If you don't care about interior condition, exterior paint, body, electronics, and engine/trans condition sure there are 1-2K wonders all over for sale. I would rather get a clean well cared for LR and pay a little more for that vs a dogged out junker.

I paid 3K for my 98 D1 last year from the original owner with 120K on it. All service was done at the local LR dealership and besides a few exterior scratches the interior was mint with brand new looking dash, and leather. Zero rust on it. Exterior paint was in excellent condition, tires were good, and not a single mechanical problem. I've driven it for a year and the only mechanical thing to fail was a rebuilt alternator he had just installed when I bought it. There were several D1's going for around 1-2.5k and they were complete trash.

My 02 D2 Kalahari was 4.5K with 224K on it and most of my friends think I was nuts for paying that much for a LR let alone one with so many miles. However it is without a doubt nearly flawless mechanical wise! Exterior is fantastic minus some light fading on the roof. Interior is also clean with just a crack on the drivers seat cushion. All electronics work, no CEL's no 3 Amigo's, cold AC, and it runs 177-188F right now and 182-193F in the summer. Zero rust on it as well. All service was once again strictly done at the local LR dealership. There were plenty of low mileage for slightly less $$$, but they either needed head gaskets, tires, or the exterior/interior's were trashed.

If you want a project you can find clean rigs with blown motors all day long. Those normally go for around 500-1K and then you drop either another 4.0L or 4.6L into it, and you'll still be around the 3K mark by the time you're done. Just depends on what you want to do really.

I think I am going to spend a little more and get a nicer Rover. I am looking at this on Saturday. The owner is sending me the vin so I can check for the oil pump failure.

That 03 looks clean. I wouldn't be worried about an oil pump issue on it since it's got well over 100K on it. Those mainly failed or were caught before 25K.
