I need to make a duplicate key that can be taken in the lake. I'm wanting to know if the duplicate will actually start the car or will it just unlock the doors?
Are D2's not equipped with a chip set in the keyfob that won't allow a cut key to work?

But if alarm is tripped it may not work, so have real deal available. see:
The RF transmitter communicates to the BCU via the RF receiver using a 70 bit code. Pressing the unlock button on
the transmitter will re-mobilise the vehicle. The RF transponder is integrated into the metal key assembly, inserting
the key into the ignition switch will induce a signal in the exciter coil to re-mobilise the vehicle.
There is a coil inside the shroud that surrounds the keylock on the column, and it works the devices inside the factory key. See attached page from RAVE.
I note that none of the responding posts were from D2 owners, so I thought I might mention this. A day at the lake should not end with immobilzation.....
No transponder in the key so you're good to go. I'd get a DI key cut from the dealer as they are steel keys. The generic keys are brass which will wear and leave brass deposits in the ignition.
I will say the DII keys are pretty waterproof. Dropped mine in the pond and it took me about three days to find it but not a drop of water on the inside. It was submerged about 4 feet.

Easy to test metal key when you have it made.
Look at my sig, I have an '04
I do remember reading that IF you lock and arm the car with a handset, it must be unlocked with the handset. As long as you lock it from the drivers door lock with the key, you will be good. I.E.- don't lock with a handset then try to unlock with a key in the door. Wont work.
