just did the head gasket on my 03 DII. I was out test driving it and it seems to be running fine with the exception of a few codes (0134 0135 0154 0155).
I shut the Rover off for about 20min, went back out and when I started it, the oil light came on. All sounds fine (did NOT run it other than for about 30 sec to drive into garage). Possible the oil pump?
This is not the original motor as the original owner replaced it because the oil pump went and he kept driving it.
Was it on level ground? Mine comes on if I park at an incline and leave it for a few hours. It goes off pretty quickly and I have checked the oil level and it is always fine, also never makes noise.

no, it was in a slight incline, but NEVER had that issue before. I pulled it in the garage where it's level and was still on. I just changed the oil, I checked to be sure it's still full and it's right where it should be.
1. In cold weather, the oil light will take longer to go out (get above 7 PSI), even down where I am. I switched from dino Rotella to syn Rotella (5W40) and light goes out before others that come on at power up self test. Like in under 2 seconds. Could be defective oil psi switch (you are not that lucky).
2. Could be oil cooler, if so equipped, not all D2's have them (between radiator and condenser, a single unit is transmission cooler, stacked units have the oil cooler).
3. Could be oil pump, it can be cracked, makes PSI to turn out light, but just enough, not good to run around on 19 psi. You can attach a manual guage and verify pump pressure, spec is 50 PSI at 2000 RPM hot.
Do you have an oil pressure gauge? If not I'd definitely get the readings done.

I own an 03' in the bad vin. range. It has 50700 miles on it. I hated not knowing what kind of pressure I was pushing. Get a mechanical pressure gauge... not digital. Even if the engine has been replaced it's a good thing to know.
This is truly a vehicle you love or hate or both. If it's not head gaskets, it's slipped liners or oil pressure problems... and how can I forget about the 3 Amigo's?
Good luck with it- If you did not have it what would you replace it with? I find myself asking that question and not having an answer for it. I thought of an FJ Cruiser but it's not apples to apples. The thought of Toyota reliability does sometimes enter my mind.

It's a love hate relationship own one or in my case two of these. As mentioned, install a gauge as the small investment could save an engine or keep you driving if you have a bad oil pressure switch. I work in aviation and I'm always for redundancy when the option is available.
Well, I just went out and started the car, oil light was on. I shut it down, went over and unplugged the pressure switch, started the car with it unplugged and it was OFF...cleaned the connection with electrical cleaner plugged it back in and then started the car and the light was still off...not sure what to think, I will get a mehanical tester tomorrow.
when testing my oil pressure, should I remove the switch and plug the tester into that?
Also, I have a mechanical gauge that I bought for another car and was thinking of using that...should that work? It's just a generic mechanical oil pressure gauge
