Default Inline thermo mod problem

I am gonna do the inline thrermo mod, but I just realized I have a different hose setup from the thermo to the water pump. Instead of a plastic 'fork' with four hoses running out of it, I have a rubber hose running from the pump to the thermo with two hose branching out of it that run to the overflow and heater.

Anybody tried just cutting that hose and re-routing it straight to the radiator?

Do I *have* to buy the $100 plastic 'fork'?

Well, after some research the hose appears to be from a D1. So I bought a replacement D2 lower rad. hose assembly new for $50 shipped off ebay.
