I'm interested in this Discovery.
I'm not sure that it's worth the money. It looks real nice and well done but the guy is asking a lot. I don't have a good feel for what the conversion is worth.

Please give me your opinions.

Phil

Well, with check engine light disabled, the OBDII port will still show MIL status to state inspector if trying to get a tag where inspections are done. Pretty pricey for a pasture ornament. A D2 petrol is a $3000 purchase. That leaves $18,000 for upgrades, put in $6000. That leaves 12,000 for fuel difference. At rates around me, and using 15 mpg petrol vs 25 mpg diesel; about 7 cents per mile savings. 171,248 miles to break even.

But a Land Rover is not for the practical, it is for the passionate. And all of them have the same gauge.....

i can provide some numbers for comparison as i looked into this.

To throw a new re-manufactured 300tdi into my rover was quoted at $15k. So I'd already be over 21k if i was going to convert my truck. Things to think about, the 300tdi is a mechanical motor, pre OBD2, so your hill descent control, Traction control, all that stuff is gone leaving you with a simpler truck under the hood. You'd want to research if the conversion also loses you ABS. Also 300TDI's are dirt cheap in the UK. Where did the Seller get this one from ? You could get a bolt in 2.8 from discotech in Vancouver for under 7K, but then you'd need the ancillaries too.

If i was going to spend this type of money on a Disco 2, I'd want to go with the TD5 swap. It's the age appropriate bolt on swap that will still let all of your electronics and OBD2 function as they're supposed to.

If you like the look of the truck and you value what they've done stylistically, why not ? (assuming you can get it registered where you live of course )

I've given up on the diesel route for my Disco 2, i don't want the hassle when/if i move out of state. I'll buy a 25 year old Rover and throw a 300TDI in that instead

Not even close to worth what hes asking, its worth $6,000 tops.
Someone spent $10,000 putting a Land Rover TDI and 5-speed manual gear box, another $5,000 or so in add on's, tires, lift, etc. and they want you to pay for it all.
Nope, keep looking.
Not to mention the bank would never loan you that much for it, you would have to pay cash because the bank will only loan you what a '03 Disco is worth.
Add to that if you have inspections/emission testing in your state it is a no-go.

disagree on your valuation of a 2003 D2 Spike, the 03's and 04's can still command upwards of 10K if they're in good shape and the 7 seater.

Agree with everything else of course, other than its a 300TDI instead of the TD5 in this rig. One last thing i was going to add, I have a 3" suspension lift on my truck and it is significantly less fun to drive on the road than a stock D2. Something to think about if you do go for it that the 5" lift and much bigger tires always come with a tradeoff, in this case, i'd be shocked if this beast doesn't require some manhandling on the freeway.

Default 300tdi

i have converted a few d1 to 300tdi r380 and zf auto.i will tell you that in two years of fuel saving you can easily pay for this conversion.i sell my converted d1's for $8000 and people love them.28mpg imperial combined driving compared to 12mpg for the v8,absolutely transforms these landrovers.the diesel belongs in theses trucks.the only burble that can be heard from the v8 is exhaust gases in the coolant.i have started a d2-300tdi and will probably sell for around $11000.td5 will be the next one when this sells.the 300 tdi is the easist engine i have ever worked on in any car or truck.timing belt can be done in less than 1.5 hour.brand new parts landed on my door step from the uk are probably half of the equivalent v8 parts aquired in north america.
i love land rovers but the rover v8,unfortunately is the biggest pos they created,i mean 2nd the first is the rover 2.5 in the freelander

....and on top of the steep price tag you get a "rebuilt title",which might be an issue when it's time for insurance.

Where are you located? I'm thinking about doing a 300TDi in a 95 D1.

How many miles are they driving a year?
I spent ~$2600 in fuel for my Rover last year.
Doing rough numbers, 12,000 miles a year, $4.05/gal for diesel, thats ~$2000/yr.
Saving $600/yr and assuming the purchase price of $8000 thats 13.5 years to pay for the truck.
Lets assume converting my truck could be done for $5000, that would still take 8.5 years to break even.
Right now, here premium petrol is $3.74/gal, diesel is $4.05/gal, diesel is always more than petrol, always.
