Default Possible XYZ Switch failure.

I have a quick question about a Tranny issue.
2001 DiscoII 66,000 miles
Problem:

Transmission in limp mode. Have the flashing M & S lights. Code P0722

Cleared codes

I drained the fluid, cleaned the pan, and put a new filter on with new O rings. Fluid was overdue and smelled used, but not burned. Refilled tranny, started engine, cycled gears, refilled tranny, cycled gears and checked level. Full, so I drove it around the block a few times and then topped off again.
Flashing M&S came back immediately and Tranny in limp mode.
P0722 code again
Cleared codes again.

Brand New Battery- 1000 CC Amps. The one I replaced tested with a bad cell and 11.5 Volts after charge.

New Battery 12.5 volts with engine off

With engine at idle 13.9 Volts
With engine at 2000rpm 14.0 Volts

Alternator is right in the middle of 13.8-14.2 Volt specs.

Drove again, Flashing M&S, P0722 again.

Is there any way to test the XYZ switch before replacing it?

Thanks all for the help.

Two things, you need a new XYZ by the fault code and if your fluid wa shat bad, I would do 1 more drain and refill to get as much of that old fluid out of the system or your tranny will be short lived.

You can pick up a used WXYZ switch for $75ish from Roverland parts.

I did this a few months back and it's a pretty easy job.

Hey there Mike. I replaced the filter at the time. Should I replace the filter again or just the fluid? When I did it originally there was NO metal nor bits in the fluid or on the magnet.

I'll drain it tomorrow and order the switch tonight. Does Roverland guarantee their used parts or is it a crapshoot?
Nevermind...I just checked Roverlands guarantee. 90 days on Electrical parts. $125.00 though.

I thought that P0722 was output shaft speed sensor or stall speed. I have the same problem and I have the codes P0722 and P1590. Yes the amigos are present but i was hoping it was because of the other code. It looks as though someone purchased a new xyz switch but they welded the lever to the cable, do you think that could have shorted out the xyz switch? I bought htis Disco knowing about his problem I couldn't pass it up for the price. If I have to get a tranny it will still be worth it. I love my Disco 2!

Just curious, did you do the last fill of the tranny with the engine running? On the follow-up drain/fill, no need to drop the pan again and swap the filter, just drain and fill again.

Well Spike the first thing I did was take to LR. They gave me a $7500 dollar estimate. Told me the ABS Modulator was bad the L/F wheel speed sensor was bad, told me the tranny was bad and it would cost $4600 to fix the tranny. I know the ABS pump works cause I can feel the brakes pulsate when I slammed on the brakes on a wet road. Changed L/F wheel speed senor. I just don't want to throw money at this LR. Haven't chaned trans fluid yet but checked it and level, color and smells ok. Checked battery voltage on and off and it was fine. Changed batt. terminals just incase.

Still no one has any suggestions? Now from what i heard the output shaft speed sensor is located behind the valvebody....right? the rave manual is pretty vauge on the location. Is it difficult to change? i am selling this because i'm not that mechanically inclined to change that sensor if i have to drop the valvebody. not trying to hide anything about the rover like some people think i am. saying that they offered me 75bucks on top of there offer, first of all never received an offer like that, just offers for like 1000bucks. i am not trying to screw anyone! if it isn't a pain to do i'll try and do it myself.
