Default sounds like an exhaust leak, but....

I can't find one.

I hear a ticking coming from the engine compartment on the Pass side. This has been going on for a while. I can only hear it when I first start the truck after it's been sitting over night or while accelerating with a load on the motor.

I recently did the head gasket (this has been happening since before), while having the head off I inspected the manifold for cracks which I did not find. I replaced the exhaust gasket at the head as well as at the pipe.

I brought the vehicle to an exhaust shop and they searched for it while the motor was cold and did not come up with anything.

Is there something else that could make this noise in that area?

Thanks,
Steve

SAI system can make ticking sounds, and certainly has parts on passenger side (and other side as well). Pump system operates on crank up the fool the EPA into thinking you are driving a sedate compact hybrid. Can operate in some other situations. This would be a good thing to check with a mechanic's stethoscope because you can do it in the first minute after cranking from a cold start.

If your SAI solenoid fails (drivers side) the two valves located one near each valve cover wont open and close properly. This leads to exhaust backflow to the SAI Pump located on the passenger side firewall which you can hear... sounds like a low frequncy rumble type exhaust leak.

If you fix the $28 solenoid before you burn out your pump you'll be about $300 ahead.

Most likely typical internal Rover engine tick. If you want some help tracking it down, send me your number and I'll call and walk you thru what to check.

I am dealing with the above-mentioned SAI problem now. But it definitly don't sound like a tick, it sounds like staright-up exhaust leak, like a hole in a pipe or something

Then crawl under your truck, while it is running, with a flash light and inspect every square inch of the manifold and "Y" pipe for cracks that can show up as black or grey soot stains.

I had the same thing but on the driver's side. Finally found it while doing a seafoam treatment when I saw some smoke coming out of where the exhaust manifold goes down towards the cat at the connection.

I think my ticking is coming from inside of my cat. I jsut drove 150 miles after resetting my codes from new O2s and redoing the heads. I JUST got a code 0430...I replaced the drivers side cat last spring, and now it's time to do the pass side. Hope this gets me a sticker!!!

I don't know why I didn't think of that? I replaced the cats on my '98 less than a year ago, 'cause they gave me a heart attack thinkin I had a rod knocking. It was that loud.
