Default Is there a Checklist for New Disco Owners (possible new sticky)

Hello,

I have read through the Disco forums now for a couple of hours and I am begining to see some of the things that can go wrong. I just bought my 02 Disco and I want to know if there is some sort of "list" that I can go through to get done the things that are most commonly wrong.

This list may be good for other Disco owners that want to do a little preventive maintenance before things fail. This list shouldnt include above and beyond modifications like lifts etc, but things that cover a daily user from being stuck on the side of the road.

Thanks in advance!

There is no since getting **** about what may go wrong, you will never enjoy your truck. What you do need to do, is to go to my service list at the top of this section and do every item on the list, with no exceptions. Do them your self so you save lots of money and more so, so that you learn what makes your truck tick.
Lastly, have some one rebuild/replace the front drive shaft if it doesn't hqave 3 grease fittings and a plug.
Enjoy.

Mike, just curious, on the DIIs, if you have a functional CDL and the front driveshaft goes bad, can you pull the shaft and lock up the CDL to prevent transmission damage?

When the front driveshaft fails it almost always happens while driving.
When driving the driveshaft spins very very very fast.
The double cardon is heavy and is located inches from the transmission.
When it breaks the rotatinal force of the heavy double cardon hits the side of your transmission like a 50lb hammer.
CDL locked or not makes no difference, the drive shaft is turning.
The only thing the CDL will do for you is allow you to remove the front driveshaft and then still drive the tryck while you have the drive shaft at the shop being rebuilt with greasable u-joints and centering ball BEFORE it fails.
If you wait until after it fails you will not only be buying a new driveshaft but a new transmission too.

Ouch. I see. I wonder if it is worth forming some sort of ds loop to contain it in that event...

Sorry if the questions seem a bit ignorant, I have not yet seen the underside of one of these. This is good information though. Thanks!

The way to prevent this from happening is to be proactive and have the double cardon rebuilt with greaseable u-joints.

I have thought what if there was a "deflector" plate to prevent the damage if it breaks.
But being proactive is the best and most fool proof route to take.

Nope, won't help, it will still bounce up and destroy the tranny, so just take care of it to start with.
