Default Time for new tires! I have a few questions.

2000 Discovery II 130,000miles, completely stock. I have the 18 inch stock rims. I am in need of advice on which tires to buy. I know the stock size is 255/55 R18. Im considering going a little bigger in size in an attempt to maybe gear the truck a little higher(slightly I know), and also the stock size tires just look a little too small for the truck in my opinion(Toyota Tundra syndrome). 58MPH = 3,000RPM on a V8? Seems a little much to me... Z-71's make that speed at 1300 RPM's. Maybe a bigger tire would bring those RPMs down a little and save a little gas, because right now it seems to get the fuel milage of a tractor. I'm more intrested in a quiet and smooth ride than I am about off roading. AND as always... price is a big factor.

1. What is the biggest tire that will fit under the stock DII on 18's without rubbing?

2. What kinda effects will going a little bigger give me?

3 What tires do you reccomend?

Most of us that go to a larger tire end up losing mpg and low end torque (assuming stock gearing).

How are you using the truck? That will dictate tire options.

I mainly just drive it on the highway. Durring the summer I do a little trailer pulling(atv and boat.) Im not talking bigger as in mud tire im talking biger as in road tire, for better ride and higher gearing.

I just changed mine to Nitto Terra Grapplers in 255/60-18" and really like them. The are about 30" tall compared to the 29's I had before. I wouldn't go any larger without some lift though. I have't noticed any mpg difference.

Also a member of the 255/60 club and agree no larger without a lift.

I swapped out steering stops for the shorter ones used with 16" wheels and had rubbing on the radius arm at full lock after I went to the 255/60s and had to adjust them out a bit.

Mine turns less than 3000 rpm at 70. Were you exagerating? Or perhaps you aren't in 4th gear?
