Default Tricky Dick - P0441

Need a little guidance

Background:

I ran into the P0441 code about 48hrs after buying the vehicle with the supporting codes:

P0441 - Purge Solenoid Valve
P0133 - Upstream O2 Oxygen Sensor
P0135 - O2 sensor heater circuit malfunction

I started by replacing the Purge Valve with this:

Amazon: New Purge Solenoid Valve w Harness Wire for Land Rover Discovery 2891022040 $21.40

I figured I would work my way through the other stuff, however, after replacing the purge valve no codes showed up for a couple days so I figured my magic fingers sorted it all out.

Then about a week later P0441 code came back with a new set of supporting codes:
P0441 - Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

I do feel a slight misfire when first starting the truck up but, it does go away.

I checked cylinder 4 wire and plug, and the plug looks normal
I disconnected the vacuum lines and reattached them to the purge valve. The only thing I didn't do was connect the new wire harness that came with the purge valve, I used the old one.

I have reset the codes about 5 different times and the same ones keep coming back.

Did I just get a bad purge valve?
Do I need to try the new wire harness?
Is there something else I should replace/ or missing?

The only other things I have done is drop in a K&N filter but, can't see how that would impact any of this.

I would not trust that purge valve from amazon.

Some on here have used a genuine Hyundi (I think) with good luck. Somebody on here would know the part number.

zuke - The part I ordered from Amazon is the Hyundi and it came from RPG Corp via Amazon.

You can also use the Dorman purge valve, part number 911-800. Any decent auto parts store has it in stock for about $25. Mine was throwing the generic evap error P0440 code and replacing the purge valve seems to have cured that (fingers crossed!)
My misfire codes went away when I replaced the upstream O2 sensors; it looks like that might be part of your trouble too. Changing plugs, coils, and plug leads won't hurt either.

Thanks for the feedback

Small update...I removed the purge valve and checked the vacuum lines and couldn't not detect any issues via visual or me blowing air through the outlet line.

However, I did read that the purge valve needs to be horizontal, well mine may have been a little cockeyed. Anywhoo...I put it back together and ran the truck a couple times and no codes yet.

Changed the engine oil and ran the engine again and no codes.

If the codes come up again tomorrow, I will go buy a couple feet of vacuum line & maybe a new purge valve while I am at the auto parts store. Replacing the outlet port line is pretty easy, changing the inlet side may be more of a challenge.

For the O2's, I plan on doing all four of them at the same time once I sort out a couple more items.

Update - new code but, no P0441 after 25 mile drive to work. I am not celebrating yet, will see if I can make it a week.

Check if theres a leak in the exhaust. Right after 1st O2 sensor going to cats, might be sucking air back in.

Yes, meant P1170

I did a ton of reading on this code, I am going to start by replacing the passenger side front O2 sensor as I am still getting a misfire on cylinder 4. I will run it for a day or so and check the codes again. "IF" I continue to get the P1170 code and a misfire on cylinder 4, it may be the passenger side cat that is going south.

I will close this thread once I am sure P0441 is resolved and start a new Tricky Dick thread dedicated to the P1170
