So I bought a 2004 DiscoII that overheated and had prominent white smoke coming out of exhaust. No tell tale water in the oil, pink coolant. PO had replaced oil pump and water pump then 2 weeks later the unit overheated and had white smoke. I immediately went to work and removed the heads but really didn't see any signs where the gaskets (that had been replaced before) were leaking.
After reading here I may have jumped the gun. No I did not pressure test anything. I am now wondering if he did something wrong when he put the front covers back on from the oil pump and water pump replacements.
Thoughts?

Definitely coolant. do you have coolant in your oil, too? If you do, then your block is cracked. The material between the cylinder wall and coolant jacket is very thin, and extremely thin on some blocks. Coupled with overheating, the liner can move up and down slightly to allow coolant to enter the exhaust and/or crankcase.
You could top top hat the block with flanged sleeves and o-rings at the bottom, but I personally wouldn't spend the money on an already cracked block. I'd find a used block, have it tested, and then top hat that.

Unfortunately if it's thick(ish) white smoke and persists after it's up to temperature it's water being burnt. If it's only on start up and wispy smoke which disappears qucikly it's usually condensation as has already been stated. Hopefully, for you, it's not water/coolant as it usually means trouble, at least a cylinder head gasket or maybe worse.
