Default What would cause a power steering pump to go bad - twice

I am looking into an 01 Disco with a bad steering pump. This is the second time it failed in a year. The owner had it replaced the first time by the local shop - presumably OEM. He is not sure why it failed but suggested maybe leaky seals somewhere.

My concern is the steering rack itself - on my 98 volvo my power steering pump started acting up because I was loosing fluid out the seals of the rack - only solution - rebuilt rack. Is this something I have to be concerned about on the Disco ?

Thanks

Rovers don't have steering rack, they have a gear box.
Since you don't know for sure, it may have had a used pump or a poorly rebuilt pump installed. Next time go with a new pump.

Most guys will put on a rebuilt pump, usually they will go out soon as well. Some guys feel if they get one with a decent warranty they will just keep swapping them but why go through all the unnecessary work.

The rover pumps suck. Take your old pump take it apart and RTV it back together. Mine lasted like that for months until the truck got totaled.

I know it can be a pain to change them over and over, maybe using the rtv trick would be a good idea. Just wanted to add that I just bought a rebuilt Cardone pump from rockauto.com and they told me that it has a lifetime warrant, so at least if it fails new ones are free. Also, they were one of the cheapest rebuilt ones I could find.
