Default Coolant loss and engine noise...droning

Freelander V6 65K Miles

I have two current issues.
1) Loosing coolant again at rapid rate. half gallon in 40 miles.
2) Engine noise...drone after 10 mins of running.

As history I had what appeared to be a HGF on the back head in Dec. My mechanic machined and replaced gasket on both heads.

NOISE: Since then I have noticed a strange noise. (can't recall if it was there prior).
- not present upon cold start up.
- noise starts after say 10mins of running
- sounds like a droning or engine laborring noise.
- appears to come from rear of engine.
- no noticeable change in performance
- does not seem related to drive-train as noise is present in neutral and also when stationary.

COOLANT LOSS: The coolant loss is as I said about 1/2 gal per 40 miles. Like before no obvious signs of leaking.

I am taking back to my mechanic but wanted to check others first.

If the engine was overheated, the liners may have settled down to a point where the HG will only seal it for a few hundred miles before failing once more. The coolant loss through the cat as steam could be damaging the converter, causing the noise you mention. I have had success using the older style head gasket to seal the head when the liner is no longer projecting above the block the .003 inches or so required to have the laminated gaskets seal. If your mechanic is going to dismantle the engine, have him check to see if the liners are projecting above the block. You should be able to hook the edge with a fingernail. If not, you may want to try finding the old style non-laminated gaskets in the UK.
