Took Disco out into the wild last weekend. Turned on truck Mon morning and it seemed to lurch a little once it was in gear moving forward. No signs of trouble once up to speed.
SES light was on. Took to mechanic and they got a P0304 code. Defined as 'engine misfire no. 4 cylinder.' Guy says something got wet in the engine and it caused the misfire. That would make some sense as I was driving through large mud puddles. (This is a Land Rover, right?!?!) Guy asked three times if I went through a large puddle as there was water stains on top of motor. Well, yes of course I did!
For past 2 days has been running fine around town. SES light now off. No sign of problem.
They say it's about $1000 with parts/labor....
Any thoughts as to how quickly I need to get this fixed??? Also all that being said is there some sort of modification I need to make to the truck in order to take it through puddles???
New plug wires, DIY, find another mechanic. P1300 and P0300 are for catalyst damage level misfires, you barely had a cough. What were they planning to do for the $1000 ?
Attached factory info on how misfire is calculated, what it means, etc.
How mechanical are you, have you done a major service on this truck along with a tune up and 8 mm silicone wires?
You should plan on asking for help, throw $$300 worth of parts and fluids at it, yourself, and save a bunch.
That being said, have you ever had your front drive shaft rebuilt or replaced yet, if not, that is even more pressing for you.

Somewhat mechanical but replacing drive shaft way out of my league. Could look at replacing wires if this doesnt require anything beyond pulling wires out/installing new ones.
Am still curious if this type of activity (driving through mud puddles at 25-30 miles/hour) will lead to this/and or other types of problems??? Am itching to get off-road again but hesitant given my poor track record.
Old plug wires will allow water and even rain to cause misfires. Operating thru water at speed brings on additional challenges, if you get an air cleaner full of muddy water things happen real fast after that. So "wading" is best done at a more moderate pace.
The wires are much harder to replace then a drive shaft. I would suggest you start becoming more mechanically involved with your truck or you may go broke.
There are a number of us that walk you thru many repairs on your truck if you can follow directions.
