I am preparing to replace my ignition switch too. I have a 99 Disco I SD with automatic transmission. I'm guessing the switch for the manual transmission won't work as it likely looks for a signal from the clutch before it will start and your wiring harness doesn't match up to the switch. Can you provide more details? Does the key turn as you would expect? Does the engine turn over?

if you still have the old switch, you should be able to disassemble it and get the stub of the key out.

if you are not comfortable with that, any locksmith will be able to fish the stub out. they have a tool just for that purpose.

The switch for a manual will work in an automatic, but you won't have the park/neutral safety switch functional or the transfer case interlock functional (manuals don't have them).
Best thing is to get the RAVE and compare the circuits between the manual ignition switch and automatic ignition switch.

Hi

I'm not sure but someone may be able to help - are the keys coded to the ignition/steering lock and BCU? if they are you may need the key and locks re-coded. Just a thought.

So my ignition switch/steering lock wore out and the key wouldn't turn anymore. I removed the steering lock from the steering column and unplugged the wiring. I then removed the ignition switch in an attempt to "get by" until a replacement arrived. I was hoping to simply use the ignition switch to start my 99 Disco ! SD. When I turn the switch to "Start" the engine turns over (sounds normal), starts for a second or two and then immediately dies. After several tries, it stays running and appears to run just fine. Odd thing is that it started/ran just fine before pulling the ignition switch. My question is this - is the start/die problem related to the fact that my steering lock and various interlocks have been removed (I'm essentially hot wiring my Disco) or is it likely something else? I replaced the Crank Position Sensor not too long ago; however, its acting like the sensor is on its last leg. I appreciate any suggestions!
