had my 1996 dicovery 3.9 v8i auto serviced, day after car stopped, engine running fine, gears sound like there engaging, just no movement..anyone any ideas?
SO!!! what have you checked so far???
My money is on a failed diff, have you tried putting the t/case in High Lock, will it move then, if so, don't drive it, have it towed to your favorite mechanic for an inspection for a diff or failed CV joint.

had disco serviced day before it came to a halt..tried just about everything n it just wont budge. someone suggested it may be transmission fluid or filter..fluid looks fine, i havnt a clue how to get to filter (new to this, my first disco, and only had it for a few weeks) only other thing is it groans a little when putting it in drive.. never had any problems before it was serviced

Mike is trying to save what little money you have left after the service department vacuumed your wallet. That little short stick shift at the front of the console - it has a shift pattern like an "H". Put main transmission in "N", and wiggle the short shifter around and push it into the lower right corner of the "H", which is High range, unlocked. That is normal place for driving on dry pavement.
If the transfer shifter is in the middle - no power is sent to any wheel.
It is very easy for some one to knock this out of "gear" or not put it in gear firmly, if they were playing with it (service departments NEVER toy with customer vehicles).
