Default Mileage on the LR2

I just hit 3500 miles on my LR2, and I'm noticing that, providing I stay easy on the gas pedal (gradual increase in speed), my mileage is climbing on an almost daily basis. I drive a combination of stop and go (town) traffic, and highway on my way back and forth to work. The roundtrip is 44 miles.

When new, I was averaging around 22 mpg on the trip. Today, it hit 27.5 and maintained it for 12 miles!!! I'm pleased. Keep in mind, if I was overly concerned about the mileage, I would have purchased a hybrid, but I like the idea that I can drive the entire week on one tank of gas! How's everyone else doing on theirs?

Default RE: Mileage on the LR2

I have about 1500 miles on the odometer.

I have been averaging ~15mpg on my daily commute to work. It's city driving and only about 5 miles each way. This is going easy on the gas pedal. Otherwise I would probably be in the low 14s.

On the highway I see ~25mpg.

I am actually pretty disappointed in the city performance I am getting. I almost feel held back when accelerating because I don't want to burn a lot of gas. My LR2 seems very sluggish to get started in first gear. Once I'm going and out of first gear it's very responsive and zippy. I'm not sure if this is common to all LR2's and I just didn't notice it during my test drives, or if something is actually wrong with my engine. Does anyone else feel their LR2 is sluggish in first gear?

Carl

How does one calculate exact mileage?
My LR2 is very quick off the line. First gear is very short lived, revs quickly and second kicks in right away. You may want to try sport mode to see if you get better response at the green light. Slide the gear shifter to the left while in drive (D) before you accelerate, also useful on hills and when passing. Basically sport mode holds the gear longer to boost torque. Your display will say "command shift". This is also the mode you need to use for hill descent mode.

Default RE: Mileage on the LR2

To calculate the exact mileage, I reset the odometer at home before beginning my trip, then reset it again when I head home that night. Otherwise, I just let it compute the average. If the average drops below 22 on any one day, then I reset it again to try and see what caused it (hilly terrain, passing other cars, lots of stop and go, etc).

I haven't noticed any hesitation in acceleration from stop. If I press down too hard on the gas, there is a slight hesitation (at stop signs, lets say). But since getting this car, I've been training myself to go easy on the gas pedal. Not only do I get better mileage that way, but it also seems to provide smoother ride overall.

What you may want to do about the hesitation, since the car is obviously still under warranty and brand new, is take it back to the dealer, and have them check the onboard computer. Sometimes, since your actual acceleration is controlled by the onboard computer, there may be hesitation. But I wouldn't take a guess on it, I'd take it to the dealer and have them check it out. No harm, no foul, and if it improves your gas mileage, that would be an added bonus!

The best way to calculate your true gas mileage is to fill the tank (don't top-off... just let the pump shut off), reset your trip odometer to 0, drive until you have to refuel (again, no top-off), then divide the total mileage driven by the number of gallons you just put in. Easy-peasy.

The vehicle's computer might display a seemingly accurate average mileage value, but it does so relying on inaccurate measurements.

I'm not so sure about the "inaccurate" measurements part of your post. I did exactly as you suggest on this road trip, and the mileage turned out to be exactly the same as the onboard computer stated. I averaged 25.4 mpg the entire trip, and using the old method of fillup and noting mileage was also 25.4.

Just got back from trip to Nova Scotia - 1750 miles each way. Mileage there was 24mpg on the inboard computer - 23.5 using actual mileage and gallons used - from fillup to fillup. This is highway only portion of the total 4200 trip - 3500highway toand from and 700 miles mixed there.

IMHO not bad.

No that isn't bad at all! Overall we're very pleased with the mileage.

Newbie here. How do you view the mpg? Is that an optional feature?
