Tire size - 265 vs 255, Falken or Pirrelli?
I apologize up front if this topic has been thrashed already. I have very few options locally for returning my LR3 to stock tire size. The PO put Cooper Discovery HTs in 265/60/18 on the vehicle, and I am not a fan. They might be better had he not run them so long with bad tie rods and cupped them so much.
Locally, I can get Falken at3w in 265/60/18, but they don't make them in 255. Pirrelli scorpions are have to ordered, but they have been discontinued, so there is that.
Are there any drawbacks to running the slightly wider tire? Is anyone running the Falken tires?
Thanks!

I have those falkens in the 265's. I really like them a lot . They have great road manners, not a bunch of tire drone. Here in Kansas dirt roads are just that, they aren't gravel roads. They have great traction on those muddy dirt roads. They aren't mud tires , but they are better than other A/T tires I've had. They won't rub even in access mode

Tyre width only starts to become an issue when you move to 295 and above. I found this very useful table some years ago, Alloy Wheel & Tyre Size Calculator. In the case of a 265 60 tyre there would be an increase in tyre diameter of 12mm which is not significant as far as road use is concerned. When you start going bigger though your actual speed is higher than your speedo reading.
In the case of the 265 60 verses the 255 60 the percentage increase in diameter is 1.57%. This has a minimal effect on speed i.e. when your speedo reads 40mph the actual speed would be about 40.628mph. It starts to be more noticeable at larger sizes and if your local police are itching to pull you over you need to be aware of how tyre size impacts on your speed.
There is one possible lucky break in that, although the speedo reads 40, the built in speedo error results in a possible 5% lower speed, thus the actual speed could be about 38.

An update, for what its worth - I ended up with the Falkens, and I am pleased. Great road manners from this tire - not too noisy either. I will be heading out to CO at the end of the month to help a friend get his cabin ready for summer - should be doing some off-roading in snow - looking forward to that!
