Default Disco I exhaust and cold air intake ?'s

Ive got a 96 Disco SE7... and was wanting to do some rather inexpensive mods myself like cutting out the resonator and muffler, and straight-piping it. Im sure that it will sound better and help my hp and torque a little bit, but with 120,000 miles on my car Im worried about horrid exhaust smoke/fumes. Could taking off the muffler and resonator hurt my disco?

Also I want to either do a cold air intake or a snorkle. I know a snorkle is better for offroading, but would it have the same benefits of a CAI since the air is coming from outside of the engine compartment?

Thanks

I replace my muffler (Magnaflow) and put a high flow resonator on my Disco I and it was to loud, set off car alarms loud.

I then had the OEM pipe with the OEM resonator put back on, its just right.
Most people just cut off the resonator and are happy with the sound.
It will not hurt the Disco to take off the resonator.
What I found was I had less low end Tq with almost no back pressure on the exhaust.

The snorkle will keep the intake cleaner with the head backwards.
Mine is like a Camel Disco so mine top part of the intake on the snorkel will not face forward.

My Disco is white and I painted my snorkel white to match.
In the Texas sun the black snorkel was like a heat sink.

If you run with both removed you will loose your back pressure and a lot of torque, don't do it.
