Default Engine/Transmission swap Questions

I have a 95 Disco with a 3.9 and automatic transmission. I am interested in swapping it out with a 4.6. I am also interested in possibly swapping out the tranny at the same time for a 5 speed. How much work is involved? Would the 5 speed need beefing up? Also, is it possible to put an ashcroft gear reduction on the 5 speed? Thanks in advance.

It can be done, it will take some effort but a 4.6 short block could be installed, so could a 5 speed, but I am not sure why you would wnt a 5 speed and if you can find a good one that has not been damaged.

The reason behind the 5 speed is that I was given the chance to drive a d90 with a 5 speed and a 3.9 and the difference between it and my disco with an auto was amazing.... Very responsive for a 3.9, i can only imagine with a 4.6 and some regearing...

Sure there is a difference, around 1200 #s lighter, it wasn't the 5 speed, plus a Defender has a lower gearing in the t/case which will maker it more responsive.

I have a 5 spd in my D1 with 4.6 and it is great but not even CLOSE to the pep " if you can call it pep" of a D90 5 spd with and a 4.6. Weight is a killer.
