Default How to best prepare for Land Rover ownership

Hi folks,
For some time, I've admired land rovers from a distance. Recently, my adult son and his family have been thinking about a second hand suv or light offroad vehicle for day trips and weekends to the desert. That got me to thinking about older jeep XJ Cherokees and Land Rover discoveries. My thought is to buy a 'weekend' machine that my son and I can spend time with maintaining and have our trips to the desert or mountains. (I'm in Southern California in San Diego).

Ive found some of the great threads concerning what to look for and the differences in DI, DII, and LR3, common problems, etc. I'm leaning toward the DI with less electronics. I also like the XJ jeeps and am considering it as well.

A couple questions:
1) was the carburated DI available in the US and for which years?
2) what kind of tools and garage setup might best facilitate Land Rover DI ownership?

Thanks in advance for your replies

New to ownership and have found that there are 12-24 essential tools for any Rover owner. These come in various size and are essential for analysis of any specific issue. I've found them immensely beneficial as I forge into the uncharted of a Disco II. (not responsible for any injury or bad decisions resulting from use of these tools)

They are just typical 4X4 trucks. Not real hard to work on, just heavy. Electronics are covered on site and a RAVE disc is the manual. Have been playin with Rovers for 18 yrs. myself, starting with a 96 D1 and an 88 Classic Range.

thanks for the helpful reply. I'll check out the essential tools list. Until I feel comfortable about the tools and skills needed, I'll wait to purchase a disco. Based on what I've read, the disco 1 might be a better bet for me. I haven't ruled out a disco 2, but the cylinder sleeves ticking and slipping thing is scaring me off.

that is reassuring. I can turn a wrench, but I've not worked on suspension. I do have a garage, but no lift. Which jack stands and/or car jacks are appropriate for such a heavy vehicle?
