Default New here and looking for info on Land Rovers

Hello,

I'm in the market for a new car and have been kicking around the idea of a Land Rover for quite a while. I really don't know much about them at all and hope I could gain some insight here.

I'm looking at a few Discoveries. From what I can gather I can find a decent condition 2003/2004 Discovery SE for around $10,000 (60-90k miles).

What I'd like to know:

How long are these engines good for? What's considered high mileage? I know Toyota's are generally good for a solid 200k, Chevy's...around 150k, what about Land Rovers? Any major mechanical issues that arise around 100k miles for the Discoveries?

What about power? I've read they're quite sluggish and get fairly poor gas mileage, is this true? I don't need a speed racer but I would like for my future 4x4 to be able to pick up and go when I need it.

What I need it for:

4WD that can take a beating. Living in the mountains and dealing with snow and off road conditions. I really like the features of these Land Rovers, especially the interior.

Any words of advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

You can find them for less. 200K and over if cared for. Water pumps, oil pumps, head gaskets. 217 HP and 4700 or so pounds - the laws of physics have not been repealed. And they leak oil in places. Best 4X4 by far. Shop and owners manuals in the RAVE download. We have a tech section that details DIY and high miles service needs.
