I look at it this way. Most guys that want to do this have bought a high miles used Rover. The engine is not as good as a new one. But the drive train is also worn. People tear up shafts and diffs all the time. Can it be done? Yes, with enough money and Tony Stark's basement. Is it worthwhile? Well, that same time and treasure could go toward tires, lockers, honkin' roof rack, lights, dual battery, and all the other things to make it a better off road machine.
Who buys a Land Rover without some spark of an idea of off road use? BTW, someone posted a pix recently of a BMW V12 dropped into a Rover.
