Well I ended up getting my hands on an 89 Range Rover, with only 52,000 original miles on it. Full time 4x4.
It did sit for a long time...but not having owned one of these I have some concerns that I am hoping someone can explain to me and ease my mind...
This thing drives friggen awesome on the many dirt roads that I have to travel. No issues it really is great. Very impressed.
But when I get out on the highway, it seems to become a different truck...like it knows its on pavement.
Speed limits where I live are 65 - 75 mph and I am pushing 3000 on the tac. I know that my trans is in overdrive and I count the shifts. The transfer case in the high position. It shifts correctly.
Is this the way this is supposed to be - 3000 rpms seems high - but this is my first Rover and would value others opinions.
I don't want to blow this thing up.
Also, the front breaks squeak like a mac truck. My rover has 52,000 original miles and had been sitting since 1994 - and the guy I got it from had driven it for about six months - and only on rural roads and dirt roads.
Any suggestions on what it could be? It seems like it happens only after they get heated it up some.
Here are some specs I found that may shed some light -
Transmission ZF 4HP22 4 speed auto w/torque convertor lockup in 4th gear
Torque Conv Lockup 40 mph (1987), 52 mph (1988-95)
Transmission Ratios 2.48, 1.48, 1.00, 0.73:1. Reverse: 2.09:1
Transfer box 1987-88: Land Rover LT230 gear-driven w/manual locking differential
1989-95: Borg Warner chain-driven, w/viscous locking differential
Transfer box ratios 1989-95: 1.206:1 (hi), 3.244:1 (lo)
Differentials 3.54:1 ratio spiral bevel diffs.
As far as brake squeaks, brake media could be contaminated, etc. Cheap to change. Wheel bearings should need new grease by now....
Made for safari, not speed, can't pass many Texaco's. If you are sure it is going into overdrive (tach drops) that is good. On some models there is a heat sensor that inhibits 4th gear until tranny reaches 150 F. As a new owner I hope you have found links in the posts on this forum to download the free RAVE document package, which is just about all the shop manuals, covering general work, body work, electrical, etc.
You probably have some issues - I just made a drive in my Disco, a 4.0 liter, and at 60 mph on the speedo my scanner says i am turning 2135 RPM. So 3000 seems high.
Saw my mechanic today and he said the same - 3000 is too high.
Wife drove it around - really impressed with how she handles on dirt roads - doesn't even feel like its on dirt...but she too noticed the RMS were pretty high too...
So now I need to decide if I should still drive it or wait until the mechanic can see it next Friday - my wife would have to drive it around town - I would have to take her van if I leave it...
SO - what would you guys do? Wait for the mechanic or go a head and take it? I would just be driving it to camp about 2 hrs from home - then I really don't touch it until its time to go home on Friday after noons.
Is this too much for the engine? Is there something I can do - like turning the idle down or something?
