Question Do I Need A New Auto Temp Control Unit?

Have a 99 Range Rover 4.0 SE. The Auto Temp Control initially reads outside temp as 0 regardless of how hot it is. Little snowflake logo appears indicating it's too cold for A/C. Once driven for awhile, maybe a block, maybe a couple of miles, finally the outside temp begins to read properly and A/C kicks in as the reading rises. Thought it might be just an outside sensor so took to the dealer. After they attempted to replace this sensor they came to the conclusion the computer was malfunctioning. As a replacement Auto Temp Control Unit is pricey, I have been living with the inconvenience of a delayed A/C. Anyone heard of this? Any alternative suggestions? Any cheap Auto Temp Control Units out there?

It could be a myriad of things causing it to do this. The computer could be acting up but then the alternator and battery could be causing it as well. If you can live with it then wait for it to kick on. I would check some local wrecking yards if you really want one or go to Roverlandparts.com.

I think you can set the interior temp to "lo" and the a/c will kick on regardless of outside temps. Its been awhile since I've tried this, may or may not work. But its worth a shot .

Yep you could just manually adjust the AC so it will work (until the snowflake disappears) I suppose. Although that would get old pretty quickly.
