Default P38 Transmission

OK. so I have a 1996 RR 4.0 SE. None of the gears engage, and it is making a horrible grinding noise. I just did a engine swap on it, and I read somewhere online that I could have done something to the torque converter when I put the engine in. Is that the problem?

So quit starting it and tow it to a good mechanic, not a dealer. Chances are you have screwed the bush on this one.

I wouldn't take it to a mechanic because it's cheaper for me to throw in a used one. I just need to know if it's a common problem and it be fixed, or if I just cooked it myself.

You'll never know unless you take the tranny apart and take a look at what's going on inside.

Any chance that the transfer case isn't all the way in high or low? (I know nothing about P38 Ranger Rovers, by the way).

Good thinking, but no. The scan tool gave me the code P1175 (Gearbox fault).

You need to find out where the grinding noise is coming from for us to better assist you.

I would guess that the torque convter has slid forwards and disconnected itself from the front pump,
the grinding is the tabs not fully engaged,
bummer bro.
Pull the trans out and remove the torque converter inspect the front pump tabs
