need help with 89 range rover diffs

new to the site and i had one question ok its gonna sound strange but i have an 88 subaru wagon. yes thats rite a subaru im tired of the running gear not holding up to 30" tall tires my neighbor said he would give me a wrecked 89 range rover. i only wana use part of the frame and the full suspension and axles. but.. my dilema is figuring out what the axles have for gears. i was told they were a 4.70 or 4.10 i looked online and tried to find a way to tell but i only saw a few people saying to rotate the tire and count the pinion revs. the numbers i got online said 10 wheel revs to 41 pinion revs made a 4.10 diff and 10 wheel revs to 47 pinion revs made a 4.70 diff. so i did this. i got 10 wheel revs and 17 pinion revs... but i noticed with 4 complete wheel revs the pinion made 7 complete revs and landed at the same exact spot they started at. as of now im stumped. could someone please tell me how i can tell what it had for diff gears? thanks for any help. from the NOOB

if its stock, it should be 3.54:1

im sure its stock but if its only got a 3.54 gear ratio than i mite as well go find a set of toyota axles, they came stock with 4.10s.

is there a way i can tell what gears it had without removing the 3rd member?
or are they all just 3.54s?

They were all 3.54. FYI, the Land Rover Series models, the Wild Kingdom models not the Discovery's, had ten spline diffs that are similar to those in the '89 Range Rover and they had 4.77's.

That would be right. Most likely, both wheels weren't spinning, so you were only getting half the revs. 2 times 17.5 will get you 35, so 35:10 is the approximate ratio. But like the others said, that's all they ever came with, so if it's stock that's what it is. The only was to be exact is to count the teeth.

Final drive isn't the only thing to be concerned about. The reason that toyotas have 4.something gears, is because their transfer case (in low) isn't geared as low.
