Low range is a transfer case setting. Selecting it puts the transfer case in a lower gear setting. This will give you better control over the vehicle while it is climbing and descending steep hills. It also assists in limited traction situations. The idea behind it is to select LO range, and then ascend a hill in the highest gear possible (do this in sport mode). While descending, select the lowest gear possible. You will be surprised as to how much engine braking really helps you out. In situations where you are traveling above 25mph, putting the rover back in HI range is recommended. I only use HI range when my average speed is below 20mph and I'm climbing and descending steep hills. Sometimes I won't use it even in mud or snow. If I get stuck, then I use it . Sort of like a last ditch effort if you will. I get it stuck in HI range, then I know I've hit the limit and then use LO range to get me out of trouble. Have fun and happy trails!

Its also good if you want to remove stumps and pull your house off its foundation

It is something I almost never use but it is a good idea to put your truck into low every few months just to make sure that it goes in ok. I have heard of people who haven't used it in years and when they really need it, it is stuck in Hi.

It is also used when you need that extra power. I have used mine many times depending on how steep a launch ramp is when pulling out my boat.
