i got the cheapest setup evarrrr. the $40 Uniden special
Amazon.com: Uniden PRO510XL 40-Channel CB Radio: Electronics

and a K-30 magnet mount.
Amazon.com: Cb Radio K30 35 Inch Magnet Mount Antenna: Electronics

the uniden is mounted on my dash just right of the speedo console

the antenna is currently at the front of my roof rack. eventually im going to move to a rear bumper mounted antenna.

How does it work on the trail?

I borrowed a Midland hand held on my last outing and I couldn't transmit and i could only hear a few of the rigs.

it works great! Its got good range I talk to truckers all the time. Dead simple, cheap and works well. I have seen people mount up where the sunroof switches are or behind the center console in the rear foot well. Ill take pic of mine tomorrow

I'm in the middle of mounting mine where the sunroof switches are. I had to run new wires to the cb anyway. I had previously used fusetaps under the dash, but got so much rf interference, I had to turn the squelch up so high I couldn't hear people more than a few hundred yards away. I also added a spring to the antenna to get it up a little higher, as it was only about 6" above the roof line previously. It's mounted on the spare tire carrier.

Ed, If you don't mind looking at it, since your truck isn't your DD, you can mount it to one of the top tabs on your ARB. gives a much better ground plane than the rear tire.

i dont have a rear tire it's in my truck now. yeah i have thought about putting it on the ARB. I am not sure yet. my k-30 is on my roof and it works great right now i have to wire my CB into the fuse box still. right now im just using a cigarette adapter and i get interference if i pull the windshield washer fluid. but since both my nozzles are broken i wont be using windshield washer fluid anytime soon so it doesnt matter.

Well I went ahead picked up a Midland 1001Z today for $30 at a Pilot Truck Stop. Now just need to choose a good antenna and find a good place to mount it.

as high as you can! i use the whip so when it bangs trees and underpasses it just bends out of the way.

I have a cheap cobra ultra and I have a ??" stainless steel antenna. Cheap set-up that has worked great so far. When I get a new bumper, I will prob change the antenna to something that doesn't whip around so much. Here are some pics... I painted the silver mount black so it blended in more.
