Pierced steel plank is a great alternative to sand ladders. I found a company in Calumet, OK that sells 10' planks for $44. all you need is one, cut it in half and bolt it to your rack. If anyone happens to live nearby or is driving past up towards the north east i would love to have a sheet!! anywho the company is Calumet Industries, Inc. their website is here PSP Landing Mat | Calumet Industries
enjoy!

Here are mine, I use them all the time at work in the winter, they are used for stairs in factories and other industrial settings.
I use something similar when I go wheeling. Very effective in snow/mud, it's easy to get a good grip on it. You have to avoid spinning tires though... otherwise tires will get bald pretty fast.
I attach a length of yellow nylon rope to one end, so if it fly out in snow, the rope sticks out of the snow even if the ramp is buried, allowing me to find it easily.
